Machines produce vibration for many different reasons. Misalignment is one of the most common causes of machine vibration, although it is a malfunction that we encounter less and less with the prevalence of precision alignment methods.
One of the most common errors in rotating equipment is incorrect or out-of-tolerance alignment of shafts. Simply put, misalignment is when the shafts of two or more machines do not share the same centerline of rotational axes. Misalignment can be diagnosed with vibration analysis, and the most accurate diagnosis will be made with a quality shaft alignment device. It is not enough to define the misalignment problem, it is necessary to perform the alignment process to fix the problem.
